Water leaks are one of the most common types of insurance claims in flats and apartments which is why we have put together the below information to help avoid water leaks this winter.

Make sure you know the location of your stop tap so you can reach it quickly in an emergency.

  • Ensure that your Property Manager has up to date contact details for you should they need to contact you in an emergency. The flat or apartment below will most likely be the first to know if your home suffers a leak.

  • Ensure that all pipes and tanks exposed to winter temperatures are well insulated.

  • If you have pipes and tanks in unheated loft spaces, open the loft hatch. If pipes or tanks are located inside cupboards, open cupboard doors. This will allow air from warmer parts of your home to circulate.

  • Prevent costly disasters by fixing any water leaks.

  • Set the central heating on a low but constant setting to stop internal pipes from freezing.

  • If you are leaving your home unoccupied for more than a few days’ then you might want to turn your water off at the stop tap and even drain the water in the system. Set the central heating on a low setting to prevent pipework from freezing.
